Rádio e Televisão de Portugal SGPS, SA, commonly known as RTP and "Rádio e Televisão de Portugal" ( Portuguese for "Radio and Television of Portugal"), and as one of its subsidiaries, '''RTP'''; is the national public service broadcaster in Portugal . Its subsidiaries are:
HISTORY RTP—Radiotelevisão Portuguesa was originally established in December 15 , 1955 . Experimental broadcasts began in 1956 from the Feira Popular studios in Lisbon . Regular broadcasting, however, did not start until March 7 , 1957 , and reached roughly 65% of the Portuguese population at the time. By the mid- 1960s , RTP was broadcasting all over the country. , two new regional channels were created for the Portuguese archipelagos of Madeira (on August 6 , 1972 ) and Azores (on August 10 , 1972 ). Before the Carnation Revolution , RTP was essentially the mouthpiece of the Regime , and famously opened the newscast of 20 July 1969 - the day of the first Moon Landing - with a segment showing president Américo Thomaz opening a concrete factory.
