Information About

Point State Park

Point State Park is a 36 acre (146,000 m²) State Park located at the confluence of the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania . The park includes the outlines and remains of Fort Pitt and Fort Duquesne as well as a large fountain spraying water up to 150 feet (46 m) in the air at the head of the Ohio River . The fountain and park were completed in 1974 . Presently, the park provides recreational space for residents in downtown Pittsburgh and also acts as the site for major cultural events in the city, including the Three Rivers Arts Festival and Three Rivers Regatta. The park is operated by the Pennsylvania Bureau Of State Parks .

Over the past few years, there has been talk of making significant changes to the park. Some feel the historic foundation of Fort Pitt - the exposure of which causes a deep trench in the grassy area closest to the city - should be filled in. They argue that it is a safety hazard and impedes the easy movement of crowds through the park. Such suggestions have been very controversial, and as such, no resolution has been reached.
