The Peerage of Ireland is the term used for those peers created by British monarchs in their capacity as Lord or King Of Ireland . Before 1801, Irish Peers had the right to sit in the Irish House Of Lords , but after the Union in 1801 , Irish peers, like those of Scotland , only elected Representative Peer s — twenty-eight in number — to the House of Lords (see List Of Irish Representative Peers ). This practice ended with the creation of the Irish Free State in 1922 . Irish Peerages continued to be created for some time after in 1898 . In the following table of Irish peers, higher or equal titles in the other peerages are listed. Also, if the peer holds a lower title in the Peerages of England, Great Britain, or the United Kingdom, and therefore sat by such a peerage in the House of Lords, such a lower title is listed. Dukes in the Peerage of Ireland Marquesses in the Peerage of Ireland Earls in the Peerage of Ireland Viscounts in the Peerage of Ireland Barons in the Peerage of Ireland Note that in Ireland, '' Barony '' may also refer to an obsolete political subdivision of a County . There is no connection between such a barony and the noble title of baron. |
