Information About

Pan Geng

Pán Gēng was a king of the Shāng Dynasty , the first archaeologically confirmed dynasty in Chinese history. He is best known for having moved the capital of the Shang Dynasty to Yīn , which today is at Ānyáng ; in Hénán Province, China . As a result, the Shang Dynasty is also called the Yin Dynasty. Pán Gēng was uncle to Shang King Wǔ Dīng (武丁), the first king from whose reign have been found inscribed significant oracle bone texts.

In the Book of History/Documents (Shàng Shū 尚書), there exists a chapter entitled "Pán Gēng", which tradition holds to have been a speech by this king; however, the language in it is so different from that of Pán Gēng's time that it is most likely not a product of his era..Loewe & Shaughnessy (1999), p.9
