In 2004 NATFHE celebrated 100 years since the London -based Association of Teachers in Technical Institutes was formed. ATTI grew to become NATFHE on 1 January 1976. As of 2005 it has 67,000 members. On December 2nd 2005 the results of a membership ballot on a merger of AUT and NATFHE was announced. The merger was supported by 79.2% of AUT and 95.7% of NATFHE members who voted. The two unions will amalgamate on 1 June 2006, and then enter a transitional year until full operational unity is achieved in June. The new union will be called the University And College Union (UCU). AUT and NATFHE have both recently voted for strike action and 'action short of a strike' - which is likely to include boycotting setting and marking exams and other coursework. {Link without Title} . on Tuesday 7 March 2006, and a marking Boycott from that date forward. Lecturers are taking Industrial Action over issues of pay, and the gap that has grown up over the last 20-30 years between their remuneration and that of other similarly qualified public-sector professionals. Prime Minister Tony Blair promised that a significant percentage of new monies released for universities would be put towards lecturers' pay; so far this has not happened. EXTERNAL LINKS
