National Assembly Of Namibia




The National Assembly of Namibia is the Lower Chamber of the country's Bicameral Parliament .

The current National Assembly, formed following elections on 15 and 16 November 2004 , has a total of 78 members. 72 members are directly elected through a system of Party-list Proportional Representation and serve five-year terms. Six additional members are appointed by the President .

Twenty-one women (18 elected and 3 appointed) occupy seats in the National Assembly.

Former Prime Minister ( 2002 - 2005 ) and SWAPO member Theo-Ben Gurirab is the current National Assembly Speaker .

Despite being a One Party Dominant State since its independence in 1990 , Namibian elections have been transparent, free, and largely fair.
