For many years Maspeth was a familiar name due to the Elmhurst-Maspeth Gas Tanks , which were a pair of large Natural Gas storage facilities. Because the Long Island Expressway frequently backed up in their vicinity, the gas tanks became a familiar item heard in radio traffic reports. However the gas tanks had been removed by 2001.

Most of the people that live in Maspeth are of Polish , Italian , Irish , German , Hispanic or Chinese descent.
