The main town and the site of its municipal council is the town of Aabenraa, which it shares with neighboring Aabenraa . Neighboring municipalities are Sundeved to the east, Aabenraa and Tinglev to the west, and Bov and Gråsten to the south. Its northern border is defined by the waters of Åbenrå Fjord and Als Fjord , which separates the municipality from the island of Als . The municipality was created in 1970 due to a ''kommunalreform'' ("Municipality Reform") that combined a number of existing parishes:
By January 1 , 2007 Lundtoft municipality will cease to exist as the result of ''Kommunalreformen'' ("The Municipality Reform" Of 2007) . It will be merged with existing Bov , Rødekro , Tinglev , and Aabenraa municipalities to form the new Aabenraa municipality. This will create a municipality with an area of 951 Km&2 and a total population of 60,151 (2005). The new municipality will belong to the new Region Syddanmark ("South Denmark Region").
