Kedar is a son of Ishmael mentioned in the Bible. The name also referred to the settlement in the Syrian Desert named after him. GEN 17:20 And as for Ishmael, I have heard thee: Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly; twelve princes shall he beget, and I will make him a great nation. (Gen 25:13-18) "And these are the names of the sons of Ishmael, by their names, according to their generations: the firstborn of Ishmael, Nebajoth; and KEDAR, and Adbeel, and Mibsam, {14} And Mishma, and Dumah, and Massa, {15} Hadar, and Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah: {16} These are the sons of Ishmael, and these are their names, by their towns, and by their castles; twelve princes according to their nations. {17} And these are the years of the life of Ishmael, an hundred and thirty and seven years: and he gave up the ghost and died; and was gathered unto his people. {18} And they dwelt from Havilah unto Shur, that is before Egypt, as thou goest toward Assyria: and he died in the presence of all his brethren." (Song 1:5-6) "I am black, but comely, O ye daughters of Jerusalem, as the tents of KEDAR, as the curtains of Solomon. {6} Look not upon me, because I am black, because the sun hath looked upon me: my mother's children were angry with me; they made me the keeper of the vineyards; but mine own vineyard have I not kept." (Ezek 27:21) "Arabia and all the princes of KEDAR were your customers; they did business with you in lambs, rams and goats." (Psalms 120:5) "Woe is me, that I sojourn in Mesech, that I dwell in the tents of Kedar!" Classical Arab historians sometimes name Kedar as an ancestor of, Muhammad although another tradition names Nebaioth , another son of Ishmael , as his ancestor. |
