John William Patrick Smith (born March 7 , 1951 ) is Labour MP for the Vale Of Glamorgan . Born in Penarth , Smith attended Penarth County Grammar School and then served for a while in the Royal Air Force . He was first elected to the seat in a 1989 by-election, lost it to the Conservatives in 1992 by a very narrow margin, and regained the seat in the general elections of 1997 .
