Information About

Jasin

Jasin is also the name of the main town in the district. It is the administrative centre of the district.

Because the district has been designated as a water catchment area, industrialization is restricted to around the towns of Jasin and Merlimau. A large proportion of the land is used for the growing of rubber trees, oil palm and fruits. The area is also known for its durian fruits. The Kesang River runs through the center of Jasin town. The old town center consists of mainly old 1920s 2-storey shophouses where small business is conducted on the ground floor and the owner has his residence on the top floor. The Kesang River separates the new town from the old town center. Modern commercial buildings adorn the new town area and only one bridge over the Kesang River connects the new town to the old town. Main businesses are conducted by the Chinese with a handful of Malays, South Indians and Gujaratis. The Gujaratis in Jasin are mainly furniture dealers and the Mavani family has a monopoly. There are 2 major banks in Jasin--Malayan Banking Berhad and Bank Bumiputra which are also Malaysia's biggest banks.

From Jasin, one can travel towards the small town of Asahan, where it is possible to ascend the peak of Gunung Ledang in Johor via this route. Asahan is a border town where one can find wonderful waterfalls.
