Opinion is divided on whether it is more appropriate to refer to this area as being in Lancashire or Cumbria . The part of the Historic County of Lancashire north of Morecambe Bay became part of the county (sometimes informally called an Administrative County ) of Cumbria in 1974. All modern maps, local government, the Lake District National Park Authority, promotional material for the area, the Post Office, and most visitors describe the area as being "Cumbria", as this is legal fact. However, some, particularly those born or brought up in the area, prefer to retain the designation "Lancashire".
