Irapuato is a city in the Mexican state of Guanajuato , lying on the Irapuato River , a tributary of the Lerma River . According to the 2000 census, it had a population of 440,134, living in an area of 845,16 km&2 which is 2.8 % of the area of the state. The city is known for its strawberries and the raising of pigs and cattle. In the pre-hispanic era it was inhabited by the Tarascan s (Purépecha) and it was named "Jiricuato", which meant "the place with houses". |
