Ipuwer describes Egypt as afflicted by natural disasters and in a state of social collapse, with slaves gaining their freedom and flaunting it. Because of this and such statements as "the River is blood" some scholars have believed the document to be an Egyptian account of the Plagues Of Egypt and the Exodus in the Old Testament of the Bible, and is cited as "proof" for the Biblical account by various religious organisations. Slaves are described as acting rebelliously, leaving their servitude, and wearing their masters' jewelry. This association with the Exodus is generally rejected by scholars, who generally place the Exodus in the reign of Ramses II , even though there is no archaeological or documentary evidence that Ramses II drowned in the sea, or had to deal with a mass slave revolt, or with anything resembling the Plagues Of Egypt . The official name of this document is Leiden Papyrus #344, after the town in The Netherlands where the papyrus is being held (in the National Archeological Museum ). REFERENCES |
