Information About

Internet Transit

Internet transit is almost always provided as a commercial service. However, ISPs are known to temporarily provide transit for one another informally and without compensation as mutual support in emergencies.

A transit agreement is distinct from a Peering arrangement, in which only traffic between the two ISPs' directly attached customers is exchanged over the peering connection, and neither ISP can see beyond the other's network to the wider Internet.

IP Transit services are a form by which a large Tier 1 Carrier or smaller Tier 2 Carrier may sell bandwidth to high volume ISPs and content providers.
