The 375 metres high television mast Gerbrandy Tower is located in IJsselstein, although it is commonly known as ''Lopik''.
The city has an old town, surrounded by a small canal. There was a castle in IJsselstein from 1300 to 1888 , but only the tower has survived. The N.H.Nicolaas-church was founded in 1310 . Inside the church there are two mausoleums; one of the family of Gijsbrecht Van Amstel ( 1350 ) and another one of Aleida Van Culemborg ( 1475 ). There is another neo-gothic R.K. St. Nicolaas-church ( 1887 ). Pope Paul VI gave the church the title of 'Basilica Minor' in 1972 .
