Guru Angad Dev () ( 31 March 1504 – 29 March 1552 ) was the second of The Ten Gurus Of Sikhism . He was born in Sarainaga village, which is in present day Mukatsar District of Punjab in India. He became Guru on 7 September 1539 following in the footsteps of Guru Nanak , who was the founder of the Sikh religion. Before becoming the second Guru, he was known as '''Lehna'''.

This second Sikh Guru contributed the following to the people of the world:

  • To do Niskam Sewa ''Selfless Service'' to humanity.

  • Completely surrender to the Will of God.

  • Disapproval of exhibitionism and hypocrisy.

  • Standardised the present form of the Gurmukhi script


The name of Guru Angad's wife was Mata Khivi . She took much interest in developing the system of Langar and spent her life in selfless service. They had many children. One of their daughters was the daughter-in-law of the brother of Guru Amar Das ji. Hence, Guru Amardas was the paternal uncle of Guru Angad's son-in-law.

Before Guru Angad Dev died, he nominated Guru Amar Das as the third Guru of the Sikhs.
