He was born George Gilbert Aime Murray in Sydney , New South Wales , Australia . He was educated at Merchant Taylors' School and St John's College, Oxford . He became Regius Professor Of Greek at the University Of Oxford in 1908 . His translations of Greek Drama were quite popular in their time. He was one of the scholars associated with Jane Harrison in the Myth-ritual school of Mythography . He was also involved as an internationalist in the League Of Nations , as a delegate for South Africa , and later in the setting-up of Oxfam . His marriage to Lady Mary Howard caused him to be portrayed in a George Bernard Shaw play '' Major Barbara ''. He was appointed to the Order Of Merit in 1941 . He gave the 1941 Andrew Lang Lecture .
