Frank Finley Merriam ( December 22 , 1865 – April 25 , 1955 ) was Governor Of California from June 2, 1934 until January 2, 1939 . A Republican , he defeated Democratic candidate Upton Sinclair in the 1934 election. He served prior to this as the Lieutenant Governors Of California from 1931-1934. He served on the California State Assembly from 1917-1926 and while there, he was the speaker from 1923-26. Born in 1865 in Hopkinton, Iowa , he began his political career as Iowa state auditor, serving from 1899-1903. He died in Long Beach, California in 1955 aged 89. |
