Its responsobilites are the coordination of Law Enforcement in cooperation with criminal police offices of the individual States Of Germany (these police offices are known as Landeskriminalamt (plural Landeskriminalämter)) and to conduct investigations in heavy crimes, especially those where other countries play a role. The BKA is also responsible for cooperation with Interpol .

It is headquartered in Wiesbaden , with further seats in Berlin and Meckenheim . The BKA is subordinated to the Federal Ministry Of The Interior and had almost 5,000 employees in 2004 .
