Flavius Eugenius was a Roman Usurper ( 392 - 394 ). Following the mysterious death of Valentinian II , the general Arbogast was forced to save his life by elevating the administrator Eugenius to emperor. He was nominally a Christian, but sympathetic to the Pagans . One of Eugenius's immediate acts was to restore the Altar Of Victory to the Senate House in Rome . Theodosius eventually confronted this rebellion, invading Italy and defeating Eugenius' army at the Battle Of Frigidus on September 6 , 394 . Arbogast immediately committed suicide after the defeat, while Eugenius was held for execution as a criminal.
