Ellens Dritter Gesang

THE LADY OF THE LAKE AND THE "HAIL MARY"

The piece is often referred to as Schubert's '' Ave Maria '', but it was originally composed as a setting of a song from Walter Scott 's popular epic poem '' Lady Of The Lake '', which was translated into German by Adam Storck . In Scott's poem the character Ellen Douglas, the "Lady" of "the Lake" ( Loch Katrine in the Scottish Highlands ) has gone with her father to hide in the "Goblin's cave" nearby to avoid drawing the vengeance of the King on their host, the Clan -Alpine chieftain Roderick Dhu. She sings a '' Prayer '' addressed to Saint Mary , who is called upon to help in her distress at their exile. Ellen is overheard by Roderick Dhu who is higher on the mountain, raising the clan for war.

The piece is said to have first been performed at the home of a Countess Sophie Weissenwolff , which led to her subsequently becoming known as ''the lady of the lake'' herself.

The opening words of Ellen's song, "Ave Maria" (Latin, "Hail Mary"), are the same as the canonical Roman Catholic Prayer Hail Mary ; this may have led to idea of using the melody as a setting for the Latin prayer itself. The words of the prayer are now frequently used with Schubert's original melody, and have become perhaps the most frequently heard use of the melody today, leading to a misconception that Schubert wrote the melody as a setting for the Ave Maria.
