It consists of 15 categories: Two-Year-Old Male, Two-Year-Old Female, Three-Year-Old Male, Three-Year-Old Female, Older Male, Older Female, Sprinter, Male Turf Horse, Female Turf Horse, Steeplechase , Horse of the Year, Owner, Breeder, Trainer, Jockey and Apprentice Jockey. Voters of the Daily Racing Form, National Thoroughbred Racing Association and National Turf Writers Association chose all finalists at the end of the year. Those same voters then vote any of the three finalists in each category. Winners are announced in January of the next year. The most prestigious Eclipse Award is the Horse Of The Year title.
