Eastern Canada (also the '''Eastern provinces''') is the Region of Canada generally considered to be east of Manitoba , consisting of the following Provinces : DEFINITIONS Although ''Eastern Canada'' typically refers to the above provinces, the region is often subdivided into Central Canada (Ontario and Quebec) and Atlantic Canada ( The Maritimes and Newfoundland and Labrador). Historically, Canada East refers to the eastern portion of the former Province Of Canada . This region was formally a colony called Lower Canada . POPULATION The total population of this region is about 22,507,099, or about 70% of Canada's population. Most of the population resides in Ontario (approximately 12 million) and Quebec (approximately 7 Million). Largest Metropolitan Areas
POLITICS At the federal political level, Eastern Canada is typically considered to be a stronghold for the Liberal Party , with the majority of its support in recent Elections coming from this region. A notable exception is Quebec, which usually strongly supports the Bloc Québécois . There are major exceptions, particularly in the rural areas of these provinces, where support for the Conservative Party is strong. Increasingly, the split is becoming more urban-rural. Eastern Canada is represented by 213 MP's (106 in Ontario, 75 in Quebec and 32 in the Atlantic Provinces) and 78 senators. SEE ALSO |
