East Hampton is a Village located in Suffolk County , New York on the South Shore of Long Island . As of the United States 2000 Census , the village had a total population of 1,334.

The Village of East Hampton is a wealthy community on the southern coast of Long Island, New York, known for its green farmland next to scenic beaches, and its many famous residents. The village is a small, more exclusive area of the Town Of East Hampton .


HISTORY

Founded in 1648 by English farmers, East Hampton remained a quiet farming community until the late 1800s, when it began to develop as a resort for the wealthy upper class from New York City . The hamlet of Springs , historically known for its contribution to the Abstract Expresionist art movement, is predominantly responsible for the attraction of wealthy second home owners.

It has become a major weekend destination for New York City residents during the summer. The area around East Hampton is also referred to colloquially as " The Hamptons ."

East Hampton is located at 40°57'25" North, 72°11'55" West (40.957004, -72.19885).

According to the United States Census Bureau , the village has a total area of 12.7 Km&2 (4.9 Mi&2 ). 12.3 km&2 (4.8 mi&2) of it is land and 0.4 km&2 (0.1 mi&2) of it is water. The total area is 2.86% water.


DEMOGRAPHICS

As of the Census of 2000, there were 1,334 people, 635 households, and 337 families residing in the village. The Population Density was 108.2/km&2 (280.3/mi&2). There were 1,745 housing units at an average density of 141.5/km&2 (366.7/mi&2). The racial makeup of the village was 93.10% White , 1.42% Black or African American , 0.15% Native American , 1.87% Asian , 0.00% Pacific Islander , 1.87% from Other Races , and 1.57% from two or more races. 8.92% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 635 households out of which 16.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.2% were Married Couples living together, 6.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 46.9% were non-families. 36.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 18.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.07 and the average family size was 2.68.

In the village the population was spread out with 14.4% under the age of 18, 4.5% from 18 to 24, 22.6% from 25 to 44, 31.3% from 45 to 64, and 27.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 52 years. For every 100 females there were 95.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.6 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $56,607, and the median income for a family was $62,500. Males had a median income of $41,181 versus $37,083 for females. The Per Capita Income for the village was $51,316. 8.2% of the population and 5.5% of families were below the Poverty Line . 13.2% of those under the age of 18 and 5.8% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
