East Ayrshire (''Siorrachd Inbhir Àir an Ear'' in Gaelic ) is one of 32 Unitary council regions in Scotland . It borders onto North Ayrshire , Renfrewshire , South Lanarkshire , South Ayrshire and Dumfries And Galloway . The area was formed in 1996 , from the former Kilmarnock And Loudoun and Cumnock And Doon Valley districts.
