Douglas stands on the U.S.-Mexico Border , across from the city of Agua Prieta , Sonora , ( Mexico ). World War I wife Hazel Carter was from Douglas. Geography Douglas is located at 31°20'42" North, 109°32'29" West (31.344911, -109.541376). Demographics As of the Census of 2000, there were 14,312 people, 4,526 households, and 3,453 families residing in the city. The Population Density was 715.8/km&2 (1,852.7/mi&2). There were 5,186 housing units at an average density of 259.4/km&2 (671.3/mi&2). The racial makeup of the city was 63.20% White , 0.49% Black or African American , 1.08% Native American , 0.44% Asian , 0.08% Pacific Islander , 31.81% from Other Races , and 2.90% from two or more races. 85.98% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 4,526 households out of which 42.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.1% were Married Couples living together, 22.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.7% were non-families. 21.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.07 and the average family size was 3.59. In the city the population was spread out with 33.5% under the age of 18, 9.7% from 18 to 24, 25.0% from 25 to 44, 18.6% from 45 to 64, and 13.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 30 years. For every 100 females there were 92.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.1 males. The median income for a household in the city was $20,567, and the median income for a family was $22,425. Males had a median income of $25,320 versus $18,447 for females. The Per Capita Income for the city was $10,232. 36.6% of the population and 32.1% of families were below the Poverty Line . 49.0% of those under the age of 18 and 21.7% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
