Dolores, Colorado




Dolores (Spanish for "sorrow" and named for the river on which it is located) is located at the mouth of the Dolores Valley and the upper reaches of McPhee Reservoir , approximately 40 miles from the Four Corners Monument . Established as a station on the Denver, Rio Grande and Southern Railway, it replaced an earlier town now drowned by McPhee.


GEOGRAPHY


Dolores is located at 37°28'28" North, 108°29'54" West (37.474540, -108.498294).

According to the United States Census Bureau , the town has a total area of 1.8 Km&2 (0.7 Mi&2 ). 1.8 km&2 (0.7 mi&2) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

The town is confined to a narrow valley bottom along the Dolores River near the point where the river turns from flowing southward out of the San Juan Mountains to the north. Built-up areas outside the city limits include extensive residential, commercial, and minor-industrial areas upstream in the valley floor, on Summit Ridge to the southwest, and on high ground to the north, at the intersections of Colorado Highways 145 and 184.


DEMOGRAPHICS

As of the Census of 2000, there were 857 people, 372 households, and 231 families residing in the town. The Population Density was 472.7/km&2 (1,225.2/mi&2). There were 423 housing units at an average density of 233.3/km&2 (604.7/mi&2). The racial makeup of the town was 84.13% White , 0.00% African American , 6.30% Native American , 0.12% Asian , 0.12% Pacific Islander , 5.83% from Other Races , and 3.50% from two or more races. 14.59% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 372 households out of which 29.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.3% were Married Couples living together, 17.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.9% were non-families. 32.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.27 and the average family size was 2.88.

In the town the population was spread out with 27.8% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 26.1% from 25 to 44, 24.5% from 45 to 64, and 14.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 93.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.1 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $30,417, and the median income for a family was $32,188. Males had a median income of $27,404 versus $19,286 for females. The Per Capita Income for the town was $14,912. 17.3% of the population and 16.6% of families were below the Poverty Line . 24.1% of those under the age of 18 and 11.6% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
