He graduated from the University Of Michigan in 1963 and the University Of Chicago Law School in 1966. He began his legal career in 1967 arguing civil rights cases for the Chicago firm Sidley & Austin. In 1969, he became the first director of the Chicago Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. He then assumed the directorship of the National Lawyers Committee in 1972 and two years later joined the Washington, D.C. law firm Hogan & Hartson . Taking a break from the firm, he was the Director of the Office for Civil Rights in the United States Department Of Health, Education, And Welfare from 1977 to 1979. He then returned to Hogan & Hartson to manage the firm's education group, which provides legal counsel to school districts, universities, and other educational institutions. Judge Tatel is Blind . Nominated by US President Bill Clinton in 1994, he filled the seat vacated by Ruth Bader Ginsburg 's elevation to the Supreme Court Of The United States . REFERENCES |
