French's best-known and most-performed works are the five semi-autobiographical 'Mercer' plays: ''Salt-Water Moon''; ''1949''; ''Leaving Home''; ''Of The Fields, Lately'' and ''Soldier's Heart''. These plays follow the fortunes of the fictional Mercer family in their birthplace in Coley's Point, Newfoundland, through the joining of Newfoundland to the Confederation Of Canada , to the departure of the family to a new life in Toronto. Almost all of French's plays have premiered at Tarragon Theatre . In 2001 , he was made an Officer of the Order Of Canada . Works:
