Rodrik was coauthor of a 2003 paper on "When Economic Reform Goes Wrong: Cashews in Mozambique" {Link without Title} , which became a microcosm of the globalization debate. It analyzed the effects of Mozambique liberalizing its Cashew industry, partly because of pressure from the World Bank . Income from cashew exports increased, although thousands of employees were laid off and several plants closed, providing ammunition to both sides of the debate.
