Commander Ramona of the EZLN died January 6 , 2006 . This remarkable indigenous Mayan woman took control of San Cristóbal De Las Casas , Chiapas , Mexico during the January 1 , 1994 uprising. Since 1994, she had been fighting cancer. In 1995, she received a kidney transplant from her brother, extending her life another 10 years. She will be remembered as a woman that gave her life for her people and their struggle against Colonialism . Despite her ever present delicate state of health she was determined to press on.

Her last public appearance was at a preparation meeting - plenary session for "The Other Campaign", in the Caracol de La Garrucha, municipality of Francisco Gómez on September 16 , 2005 .

Upon word of her departure, Delegate Zero (p.k.a. Subcomandante Marcos ) suspended "The
Other Campaign" activities for several days to be present at the funeral service of this important woman to Zapatista cause and the rights of Indigenous Peoples in Mexico.
