Colenso is a Town in KwaZulu-Natal Province , South Africa . It was established in 1855 at a ford on the Tugela River . It was named after the Anglican bishop of Natal and champion of the Zulu cause, John William Colenso . The first major battle of the Anglo-Boer War was fought here in 1899 .

Bishop Colenso (referred to above), after whom the town is named, was a highly controversial figure involved on the Darwinian side of the 19th cent. debate between the theory of Evolution and the account of the Creation in Genesis . He was a first rate biblical scholar and at the same time a Christian Humanist. He was, in effect however, 'excommunicated' and deposed from his diocese for his audacity in discussing religious doctrine with his African parishoners – for which he was ridiculed by The Times of London .

He is particularly interesting in that his career showed that .
