City Gate - ''Bieb il-Belt'' as it is known in Maltese is the main entrance to city of Valletta . The present doorway was built in 1964 and is controversial on the island.

The present gate has replaced two previous gates - one built during the time of British ( Porta Reale ) and the original Porta San Giorgio built by the Knights.

The construction of the New Gate has brought criticism in Malta, and there are plans to destroy the gate and rebuild it. The project is related to the construction of the Royal Opera House which is situated closeby.
