China Inland Mission

The China Inland Mission was a Missionary Society , set up by English missionary Hudson Taylor on 25 June , 1865 in Brighton during a home leave. Taylor had not found a missionary society run on the same spiritual principles.

The society was founded on principes of faith and prayer. Like his missionary forebears Karl Gützlaff and William Chalmers Burns {Link without Title} he was convinced that Chinese clothing should be worn when engaged in missionary work in inland China.

On 26 May 1866, the first group from the newly founded mission travelled to China on the sailing ship "Lammermuir". This journey took 4 months.

Hudson Taylor had previously traveled to China on 19 September 1853 as a missionary of the Chinese Evangelisation Society . He took over a hospital at Ningpo .

The newly founded China Inland Mission worked on Taylor's principles. In 1872 the China Inland Mission's London council was formed. In 1875 it began to evangelise China systematically. He requested 18 missionaries from God for the nine provinces which were still unreached. In 1881, he requested a further 70 missionaries, and in 1886 100 missionaries. Repeatedly there were crises in the mission and attacks from local people.

In the meantime Taylor travelled across several continents to recruit for the China Inland Mission. In 1900, attacks took place in connection with the Boxer Rebellion . In the same year Dixon Edward Hoste took over the directorship of the mission. The China Inland Mission was connected with the Revival Movement and/or the Holiness Movement . In 1951, the China Inland Mission had to withdraw from China after the Communist Party came to power. However it continues its work in other far-eastern countries as Overseas Missionary Fellowship (OMF). In 1980, Hudson Taylor's great grandson, James Hudson Taylor III , became General Director of the mission work. The work continues to the present day.
