  • It is a proper name of the largest Christian denomination comprised of 23 autonomous churches in communion with the bishop of Rome (see list below), also called the Roman Catholic Church .

  • It is commonly used interchangeably with the largest of these churches, the Latin Rite Church (consisting of 98% of Christians in communion with the bishop of Rome).

  • It is a proper name of the denominations of the Eastern Orthodox Church .

  • Many Christian denominations, which are not in full communion with the bishop of Rome, identify themselves explicitly as Catholic (for example, churches of the Anglican Communion ). Indeed, some use the term "Catholic Church" in their name (e.g., The Old Catholic Church , the Polish National Catholic Church , the Ecumenical Catholic Church ).

  • The sense of the "universal" and apostolic church. Most Christian denominations will describe themselves as 'catholic' in this sense based upon the affirmation of the Nicene Creed and Apostles' Creed , that believers are members of the 'One, holy, Catholic and apostolic Church'.
