Chun was born in Höchst, today a part of Frankfurt , and studied Zoology at the University Of Leipzig where, after posts in Königsberg and Breslau , he was appointed professor for biology in 1892 . He initiated and led the German deep sea expedition, which set out on August 1 , 1898 from Hamburg to explore the deep sea in the sub Antarctic seas. They visited Bouvetøya , the Kerguelen Islands , and other islands in the area, before returning to Hamburg, where they arrived on April 30 , 1899 . Chun was a specialist on Cephalopod s and Plankton . He discovered and named the Vampire Squid (''Vampyroteuthis infernalis'', lit. "vampire squid from hell"). He died on April 11 1914 in Leipzig .
