Cadbury Schweppes plc is a Confectionery and Beverage company with its headquarters in London . However, it does not manufacture Schweppes beverages for Hong Kong, Ireland or the United Kingdom , having sold its trademarks there to The Coca-Cola Company (in Hong Kong, Schweppes products are bottled by the Swire Coca Cola Company). The company came under minor criticism for failing to have any Fairtrade products and so Cadbury Schweppes bought out organic chocolate maker Green & Black's in 2005 from their original 5% stake (it is also notable that none of its major competitors ( Nestlé , Mars et al.) have Fairtrade branded chocolate either).

OVERVIEW

Schweppes

In 1783, Jacob Schweppes developed a method to make Carbonated Water in the Swiss city of Geneva .

Joseph Priestley first discovered a method of impregnating water with carbon dioxide when he suspended a bowl of water above a beer vat at a local Leeds brewery. The air blanketing the fermenting beer — called variously 'fixed air' and 'mephitic air' — was known to kill mice suspended in it. Priestley found water thus treated had a pleasant taste and he offered it to friends as a refreshing drink. In 1772 Priestley published a paper entitled Impregnating Water with Fixed Air.

Cadbury's

Independently, in 1824 , John Cadbury began vending tea, coffee, and (later) chocolate in Birmingham in England and sometime in Pakistan . The company was then known as Cadbury Brothers Limited.

After the World War I , Cadbury Brothers Limited undertook a financial merger with '''J.S. Fry & Sons Limited'''.

After John Cadbury's retirement, his sons, Richard and George , opened a major factory in the purpose-built suburb of Bournville , four miles south of the city.

Merger

The two companies merged to form Cadbury Schweppes in 1969. Cadbury also operates factories in Dublin ( Ireland ), Dunedin ( New Zealand ), Ringwood ( Melbourne , Australia ) and Claremont ( Tasmania , Australia ).
