Broager is a municipality ( Danish , '' Kommune '') in South Jutland County on the east coast of the Jutland peninsula in south Denmark . The area was formerly known as Northern Schleswig. The municipality covers an area of 43 Km&2 , and has a total population of 6,290 (2005). Its mayor is Jørn Lehmann Petersen, a member of the Social Democrats (Socialdemokraterne) Political Party . The municipality's main town and the site of its municipal council is the town of Broager. Other towns in the municipality include Egernsund and Rendbjerg. The municipality lies on the Broager Land peninsula, and is therefore surrounded by water on three sides, the waters of Flensborg Fjord leading into the Baltic Sea . Neighboring municipalities to the north, Sundeved and Sønderborg , are connected by land, but Gråsten to the west is separated from the municipality by the Egern Strait (''Egernsund''), a narrow Strait . A bridge connects the municipality to Gråsten over the strait. The municipality was established in 1922 by merging Egernsund and Broager parishes. The municipality escaped further municipal reforms in 1970 as its population was then over 6,000 inhabitants. By January 1, 2007 Broager municipality will cease to exist due to ''Kommunalreformen'' ("The Municipality Reform" Of 2007) . It will be combined with existing Augustenborg , Gråsten , Nordborg , Sundeved , Sydals , and Sønderborg municipalities to form the new Sønderborg municipality. This will create a municipality with an area of 499 Km&2 and a total population of 49,886 (2005). The new municipality will belong to the new Region Syddanmark ("South Denmark Region"). THE TOWN OF BROAGER The town of Broager lies in the middle of the peninsula by a major road, which leads to the Egernsund Bridge, which crosses over the Egern Strait to the Jutland mainland. The town's two-towered church is its most important landmark, and is slated to be finished with restauration in 2005. History ATTRACTIONS FAMOUS RESIDENTS OF THE MUNICIPALITY EXTERNAL LINKS
