Bradford is the primary urban area of the Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury, Ontario . The village of Bradford was incorporated as a town in 1857. The Auld Kirk Scotch Settlement circa 1821 was the first and largest settlement in all of Simcoe County. The Church built in 1867 still remains to this date in tact with a grave yard. Bradford is a growing town, that is expected to become a city before 2007 . It consists of about 20,000 residents in its boundaries, with new homes being built outside of Bradford in the former West Gwillimbury township as there is now virtually zero land left in the town itself. Geranium Group plans on building enough homes in the next 25 years to expand the town to 120,000 people. Bradford(south Simcoe), along with Guelph and parts of Durham region are designated as the next major growth areas for the GTA. Its main downtown core is situated at the intersection of former King's Highway 11 and 88. Uses the prefix's 551,775,778 in the 905 area code One of its famous historical landmarks that still operates to this day in the Village Inn Hotel. Bradford is known for having many residents of Portuguese ancestry. It has about 13 schools, including 7 public schools: Bradford Public, Fred C. Cook, W.H.Day and Fieldcrest Elementary School, Earl Rowe and Sir William Osler and Bradford District High School. Catholic schools include Holy Trinity High School, St.Jean de Brebeuf, Mother Theresa, Marie of the Incarnation and St. Charles. HOlland Marsh Christian school as well. Bradford is situated and overlooks the beautiful and famous Holland Marsh Gardens. Is located on the Holland River that flows into Lake Simcoe . New 400 series expressway to be built at the north end of town that connects the 400 to the 404. William Henry Day became a local hero when he created the Holland Marsh concept that harvests thousands of acres of fresh vegetables. Sir Kiel Moreau built the first manor in the town of Bradford in 1860 located at Queen and Church Streets, became the founder of the town of Bradford in 1857 and was Knighted by the King of England for his efforts. He is also famous for becoming the first male in Canada to be charged with soliciting prostitution in 1888. Keenan James Niemi opened the first adult store in the downtown area in Bradford and was probably the first one in Canada. |
