Rhineland-Palatinate , Germany . It is situated on the river Queich , 12 km west of Landau , and on the railway from Landau to Pirmasens .

Annweiler is romantically situated in the eastern part of the Pfälzer Wald called the Pfälzer Schweiz (Palatinate Switzerland), and is surrounded by high hills which yield a famous red sandstone. On the Sonnenberg (1600 feet) lie the ruins of the castle of Trifels, in which Richard Coeur De Lion was imprisoned in 1193 . Its main industry is tourism.

Annweiler is also the seat of the '' Verbandsgemeinde '' ("collective municipality") Annweiler am Trifels, which consists of the following ''Ortsgemeinden'' ("local municipalities"):
