Ammersee ( Lake Ammer ) is a lake in upper Bavaria , Germany located in the southwest of Munich between the towns of Herrsching and Diessen . With a surface area of approximately 47 Square Kilometre s it is among the five largest German lakes. Its elevation is 520 metres, its maximum depth is 81 metres. Like other Bavarian lakes, Ammersee developed as a result of the Ice Age Glacier s melting. Ammersee is fed by the River Ammer which flows as Amper out of the lake. Like its neighbour lake, Starnberger See , which is similar in size and shape, it is a popular location for Watersport s. Ammersee and Amper are part of the ancient Celtic amber tradingroute leading to the Brennerpass ("Burner"-pass) and their names may be derived from the word Amber . In ancient times the Celtic city Damasia was located near the lake. EXTERNAL LINKS |
