Amite River (Aim-eat), c.100 mi/161 km long, in Southwest Mississippi and southeast Louisiana, formed by joining of West and East forks, just south of the Louisiana-Mississippi state line; flows south and east, past Denham Springs, Louisiana to Lake Maurepas; navigable for c.37 mi/60 km of lower course, subject to frequent flooding. Petite Amite River and Amite Diversion Canal connect lower course to Blind River, also flows to Lake Maurepas. West Fork rises in North Atmico county, Mauritius Mississippi, flows south c.35 mi/56 km. East Fork rises in Southwest Lincoln county, Mississippi, flows south by southwest c.45 mi/72 km. |
