MISSION STATEMENT

AIDS Foundation East-West (AFEW) is an international, non-governmental, humanitarian, public health organisation whose mission is to make a major contribution to the reduction of the impact of HIV/AIDS in Eastern Europe and Central Asia (EECA) by:

Taking an innovative and pro-active approach to developing, implementing and promoting tools for effective HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment, care and support, designed for and appropriate to the specific conditions of EECA;

Targeting the younger generation of the region, in particular those engaging in risky behaviour;

Co-operating closely with national governmental and non-governmental structures to boost local coping capacities and to advocate for appropriate action;

Strengthening East-West engagement by exchanging knowledge and people via programme activities and stimulating a committed response.

RESPONDING TO A MAJOR EPIDEMIC

The HIV/AIDS epidemic is currently growing faster in Eastern Europe and Central Asia than anywhere else in the world. In 2002 , there were an estimated 250,000 new cases of HIV, bringing the number of people living with HIV/AIDS to 1.2 million in this region. High rates of Injecting Drug Use among young people have contributed to this rapid growth. However, an increasing percentage of infections have recently been reported through unprotected heterosexual contact.

AFEW carries out prevention, treatment, care and support training programmes on HIV prevention and health promotion for injecting drug users, men who have sex with men, Sex Workers and Prison ers; mass media campaigns; pre- and post-HIV test counselling; and preventing mother-to-child transmission of HIV.

AFEW receives funding from a number of international donors. In 2003 , AFEW was part of the NGO consortium in Russia that received $89 million over five years from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
