The 2006 NFL Draft , the 71st in league history, took place in New York City at Radio City Music Hall on April 29 and April 30 2006 . For the 27th consecutive year, the draft was telecast on ESPN and ESPN2 , with additional coverage offered by ESPNU and, for the first time, by the NFL Network . Having signed a contract with the Houston Texans on the evening before the draft, Mario Williams , a Defensive End from North Carolina State , became the draft’s first pick and the first-ever number one overall pick to come from an Atlantic Coast Conference school. 1 Kevin McMahan , a Wide Receiver from the University Of Maine , was picked 255th overall by the Oakland Raiders , becoming Mr. Irrelevant for 2006. The Ohio State Buckeyes had the most first round selections with 5 and the USC Trojans had the most overall selections with 11. Twenty-seven compensatory and supplemental compensatory selections were distributed amongst seventeen teams; Tampa Bay , Baltimore , and Tennessee each held three compensatory picks.

NOTABLE PLAYERS

  • Quarterback Marcus Vick of Virginia Tech was not drafted after his permanent dismissal by the Virginia Tech Hokies .

  • Jai Lewis , of the George Mason Patriots basketball team that made the 2006 Final Four , entered the draft as one of two players who did not play college football. He was signed after the draft by the New York Giants as a tight end.

  • Despite being banned from playing college football at Colorado for accepting endorsements while on the US Olympic Team, Jeremy Bloom was drafted in the fifth round by the Philadelphia Eagles .

  • ' A.J. Hawk . Brooks has often been compared to NFL linebackers Ray Lewis , Brian Urlacher and Lavar Arrington for his top-level athleticism, playing style and build.-->

  • John David Washington, son of Denzel Washington, was signed by the St. Louis Rams as a running back, although he wasn't drafted. He was among 10 undrafted players signed. Last year he was at Division II Morehead College, setting a school record, rushing 1,198 yards.
