Information About

2002 Dns Backbone Ddos

This is significant since the DNS servers allow for individuals to input internet address host names (i.e. www.wikipedia.org) without having to know the IP address. It is in essence a directory to translate host addresses into IP numbers invisibly for the user.

This event was the first significant attack directed at trying to disable the Internet itself, instead of specific websites. The largest malfunction of the DNS servers before this event were 7 machines in July of 1997 , but was due to a technical problem.
