Volkhov () is a town in Census ); 50,000 ( 2001 est.).

The town grew up during the industrialization of the first half of the 20th Century . Volkhov railway station appeared in 1904 in Zvanka village, as the railway connecting St. Petersburg and Vologda was built. In 1918 , construction of the Volkhov Hydroelectric Dam (the first in the Soviet Union ) started at this spot. In 1926 , the dam was opened, and in 1932 the first Aluminium plant in the USSR was launched nearby. On December 27 , 1933 the settlements serving the station, the dam, and the plant were merged with several nearby villages to from the city of Volkhovstroy. In 1940 the city was renamed to its present name.
