(うるま市 ''Uruma-shi'') is a city in
Okinawa Prefecture ,
Japan .
On
April 1 ,
2005 ,
Gushikawa-shi ,
Ishikawa-shi ,
Katsuren-chō , and
Yonashiro-chō merged to form
Uruma City .
The city name comes from an archaic alternate name for Okinawa in
Okinawan , meaning coral (''uru'') + island (''ma''). Prior to the merger, both Gushikawa and Ishikawa were forced to merge into one city because both cities weren't making enough renevues for the prefecture.
It is located near the center of
Okinawa Island , facing east. It consists of
Yokatsu Peninsula and the eight islands of
Yokatsu Islands .
