Upon the successful Reboot of the Batman film franchise by the 2005 film '' Batman Begins '', an as yet untitled sequel to the film has been commissioned for a 2008 release. So far, Christian Bale , Michael Caine , Gary Oldman and Morgan Freeman have been confirmed to reprise their roles from the previous film ( Bruce Wayne , Alfred Pennyworth , James Gordon and Lucius Fox respectively). It will be directed by Christopher Nolan . Rumored titles include: ''Batman Continues'', '''Batman Strikes''', '''Batman Attacks''', '''Batman: Haunted Knight''', '''Batman Escalation''' & '''Batman II'''. EXPECTED PLOT There is a lot of speculation that the plot will be based on the graphic novel series ''''. Since ''The Long Halloween'' features mobster Carmine Falcone prominently, it is possible that actor Tom Wilkinson might make a return appearance, since his character was not killed off in '' Batman Begins ''. A possible reprise of The Scarecrow by Cillian Murphy is not expected to be in this film, although Murphy may return for another installment in the future. NEW CHARACTERS It is expected that this film will feature , Lachy Hulme , Paul Bettany , Ralph Fiennes , David Bowie , Hugo Weaving , Jude Law , Johnny Depp , Christopher Eccleston , Tim Roth , Daniel Day-Lewis , Sean Penn , and Crispin Glover . {Link without Title} , Terrence Howard , Josh Lucas , Ray Liotta , Liev Schreiber & Denzel Washington . Out of all the canidates, Lucas and Gyllenhal have announced that they are competing for the role. The Penguin and Black Mask have also been rumoured to have a part in the film, with Bob Hoskins and Oscar -winner Philip Seymour Hoffman being rumored for the former role. It is believed that Hoskins is also being considered as the gangster "Boss" Moroni, who throws the acid into Dent's face, thus sparking his transformation to Two-Face. However, in Goyers' script treatment, Joker is the one who scars Dent, and this version will most likely make it to the silver screen. Known character actor Brad Dourif is also being considered to portray Dr. Arkham, the man who founds (and is later institutionalized in) Arkham Asylum . There is also talk that Alberto Falcone, Carmine Falcone 's son who becomes The Holiday Killer will be involved. Due to fan reaction of Katie Holmes ' character, Rachel Dawes, there is a rumor that the character might be written out of the series to make way for a new female lead, possibly Vicki Vale or Selina Kyle . Since Holmes is committed to other projects and her marriage with Tom Cruise and her pregnancy, this could be true. It has also been rumoured that '' The O.C. '' star Mischa Barton will have the role of Bruce Wayne's new love interest. Nolan has stated that Robin will not be in any of the sequels, likely because his apperances in the two films of the Joel Schumacher continuity were considered to be a factor in the franchise's decline, although Nolan has stated the reason is "at the time we are portraying Batman (in his early twenties), Dick Grayson is a little boy at this point."
