The UW Colleges also grants associate degrees through its online program. Two year "technical" colleges are operated by the Wisconsin Technical College System . There is also the UW Extension , which operates extension courses statewide through offices in each of Wisconsin's 72 counties. The UW System was founded in 1971 with the merger of the University of Wisconsin, which included the Madison , Milwaukee , Green Bay and Parkside campuses, the Centers and the Extension, and the Wisconsin State Universities, which included the other nine campuses. It serves approximately 160,000 students, ranking second in the nation behind California .
